John 3:16 –
“For God so loved the world be gave his Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall have everlasting life.”
During this time and season many often turn to the One who calms and steadies our hearts. The Babe in a Manger who helps us to refocus on what is of true value and worth as we ponder and say, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” The words many of us know so well – the Christmas story.
However, this year our hearts are heavy and laden with grief and sorrow for so many loved ones lost in an act of darkness, none can fathom.
Death, pain and sorrow, even though God’s hand does not always prevent them, he understands them.
He understands the great void, loss and separation.
He understands the dark shadow of being forsaken, broken and abandoned.
He understands darkness attacks the strongholds and fortresses for our loved ones who are precious in our hearts.
He understands suffering and great sorrow.
He not only understands, but partakes in our pain, sorrow and loss.
God understands because his One and Only Begotten Son endured pain, suffering and sorrow.
His Son, abandoned and broken – all the way to the Cross – unto death.
Christ’s death that says, “I have overcome the darkness.”
Christ said, “…in Me you may have peace and confidence. “In the world you will have tribulation, trials, distress and frustration; but be of good cheer! For I have overcome the world.”
Even in the midst of our sorrow and grief, God’s (complete understanding) Spirit fills our hearts with his peace; peace the world does not understand. We only need to believe, ask and trust him.
So, when the Good Shepherd makes us to lie down in green pastures, he leads us beside the still and restful waters. He guides and shields us. He refreshes and restores our lives to himself. We need not fear the shadow of death for he is with us as his rod and staff protect, guide and comfort us. He prepares a banquet table before our enemies. He anoints our head with oil (the Holy Spirit) in heavenly fellowship with him. There, only his goodness, mercy and unfailing love shall be our dwelling place.
This year, in time, our nation’s sorrow and grief will, eventually, return to peace and renewed joy to remember to celebrate the birth of our Saviour.
Christ Jesus, the Star of Bethlehem. He pierced the darkness and shines his peace and joy in the hearts of men.
