Be Watchful…

Philippians 4:8-9

 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.  Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”  NIV

 Christ is our example.  As we trust in him, he transforms our hearts and minds.  

We are called to live and conduct our daily walk by a different standard.  Renewal of the heart and mind requires us to put into practice all we learn, receive and hear from our Lord.

Are we being watchful?

We are to guard and be watchful of our thoughts in such a way they begin to embrace every virtue and command.  The scripture says to meditate on the true, genuine and most excellent qualities and character.  They characterize the things which should fill our thought life.   They influence our words, actions and daily habits.  Eventually, they define our character.  Is our character one that is undefiled, pleasing and in harmony with our Lord?  Daily, are we walking in such a way that is admirable, worthy and one that extends grace?

Are we being watchful?

Many strongholds in our lives prevent us from leading every thought and purpose captive into the obedience of Christ.  They may be things we lust after with our eyes,  thoughts and images of the past, or mental images or evil thoughts to lead us astray.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ equips us beyond mere human ability to overthrow those strongholds.  In stillness and silence we can guard and watch our hearts and thoughts through humble prayer.  The Bible says to continually pray without ceasing.  The Lord is faithful to help us when we call upon him.

Are we being watchful? 

When we do not guard our hearts and minds the door of harassing temptation is often opened.  When we fail, we must choose to accept, patiently, whatever trials may come.  We must always be mindful of consequences before the door is opened.  They are warnings and can be the doorkeepers that stop us from entering.  We must remember, the Lord is always there to restore and continue to help us even when we fail.

When my son was in scouting, we were introduced to the following quote credited to Charles Reade.  I have it in several places around my house to remind me to be watchful in my home and as I walk out the door.

“Watch your thoughts,
they become words.
Watch your words,
they become actions.
Watch your actions,
They become habits.
Watch your habits,
They become character.
Watch your character,
It becomes your destiny.”

We are destined, set apart, for the Lord’s purposes.

Change My Heart, Oh God, may this song be a reminder.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12 NIV

Yes, scouting can stretch one beyond belief when you're a mom. I enjoy outdoor activities, cycling and just recently, standup paddle boarding (it doesn’t hurt when you fall). I love Colorado, great place to live! I am discovering how much I love “words”… His Words. They are written on my heart and constantly on my mind. With much prayer and a humble heart, may the words I write be pleasing to Him. And He said unto them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature.   1. I loved to see this one birthed! We aren’t thinking about things in life. Most of us just plod along. These Scriptures and reminders poke me to wake up, to watch, to pay attention!

    Yes, Colossians 3:12 was a reminder to me. He chose us to be clothed, to wear his very nature around our whole being, inside and out.
